Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. No other beverage has had such a transformative effect on world history.
It is hard to imagine life without coffee. The history of coffee dates back to about the 9th century. There are many reasons why people drink coffee, but the main reason is that it tastes good.
Coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goat herder who noticed that his goats became more energetic after eating the red berries from a certain tree. It was not until the 17th century that Europeans got their first taste of this mysterious drink. They were amazed by its energizing effects and demanded more for themselves and their people.
The first coffee shops in Europe were not so much places to drink coffee, but places where people could gather and debate the latest news and philosophic concepts of the day.
The industrial revolution occurred because people needed better ways to keep themselves awake. The same thing can be said about the enlightenment, where thinkers needed a way to stay alert so they could continue staying up all night thinking about philosophical questions or trying to discover new things in science, art and literature.
As the story goes, coffee was discovered in the 9th Century by an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi.
Kaldi noticed that his goats were more energetic after eating the berries from certain bushes. And thus coffee was discovered.
During the Age of Enlightenment, the coffeehouse became the centre of new ideas in science and art. People started switching from alcoholic drinks to caffeinated drinks like coffee, which stimulated their bodies and minds giving them extra energy and focus to transform long-held ideas about the world around them.
Coffee kept workers going during the industrial revolution. Replacing beer with alcohol allowed people to work in a more focused way for long hours. Without this level of energy at work, the Industrial Revolution might never have happened.
